St. Joseph Calasanctius offers classes to prepare children for First Reconciliation, First Holy Communion and Confirmation. The preparation process begins in Grade 2 or at the age of seven. These classes are specifically tailored to children who attend public school, are homeschooled or who missed receiving their sacraments in Grade 2. Parents can email the parish office or stop by during office hours to pick up a registration form. Classes begin in January.

Who can register for sacramental preparation classes at St. Joseph?

My child is in Grade 2 at a North Battleford Catholic school. How do we register?
Grade 2 students attending a North Battleford Catholic school will receive preparation for their sacraments through religious classes at their school. Parents who would like their child(ren), to receive their sacraments will be provided with a consent and regisration form.
Where do I get the registration form?
Registration forms are available at the parish office. Please email the parish for a registration form or visit the parish office during regular business hours.
When will class dates and schedules be available?
Classes typically begin in January; However, the full schedule, including class dates and times, are released closer to the start of classes.
Is there a cost associated with this preparation?
There is no fee associated with children's sacramental preparation, as the cost of program materials, refreshments, and so on, are covered through donations. We thank the volunteer catechists, parish priests, teachers and parents who help make children's sacramental preparation possible.
What if my child is not ready to celebrate the sacrament?
It important that each child is ready to celebrate their sacraments. This is why these sacraments are celebrated at the age of 7, so that they can freely choose to receive the sacraments. If your child expresses concerns about not being ready, please contact Fr. Tai Le or speak to the coordinator.
Can a child receive First Communion if they are not baptized?
No. Children must first receive baptism. If you would like your child to receive first communion, please contact the parish office as soon as possible to schedule their baptism.
Can an Eastern Catholic or an Orthodox child receive First Holy Communion?
First Holy Communion is usually the first celebration of the Holy Eucharist; However, because baptized children from ecclesial communities normally received First Communion along with Baptism and Confirmation, these children do not usually celebrate First Holy Communion again.
Please contact the parish office and speak to Fr. Tai about your particular situation, especially if the child has a Roman Catholic parent or if the parents would like to be received into the Catholic Church.

Yes. Reconcilliation will be offered at both EMBM and Holy Family as well as each Catholic Parish in the Battlefords, prior to the Confirmation Mass. This will provide each family will numerous opportunities for their child to receive the sacrament of Reconciliation. The Church teaches that it is “the place of parents, as well as the duty of pastors, to take care that children who have reached the use of reason are prepared properly and, after they have made sacramental Confession, are refreshed with this divine food as soon as possible” [Code of Canon Law, c. 914]. The same canon of the Code of Canon Law teaches that it is “for the pastor to exercise vigilance so that children who have not attained the use of reason or whom he judges are not sufficiently disposed do not approach Holy Communion”.

A child normally starts going to Confession as he/she prepares for First Holy Communion and after he/she has received instruction (catechesis) on this sacrament from the school or parish.

Active participation at Mass on Sundays is always essential. Being present at your children's parish preparation when appropriate; praying for and with your children and bless them; and loving the Church, the people of God, publicly and privately.

What documents do I need to provide to register my child(ren) for classes?
Parents are required to fill out a registration form, and provide a copy of the child(ren)'s baptism certificate. There are also responsible ministry forms that must be completed before your child(ren) can attend classes. If your child is not baptized, they can still enroll in the classes, but you will need to contact the parish as soon as possible to schedule a baptism if you would like your child to receive their sacraments. When requesting baptism, you will be required to provide a copy of your child's birth certificate.
